Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet given a sixties twist by Llanelli group reports local paper

ONE of the greatest love stories ever told is set to get a 1960s take when it's performed in Llanelli.

BOOM! Productions has adapted Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, giving it a mods and rockers makeover.

Set to be performed at the intimate Stiwdio Stepni next month, audiences will experience the 400-year-old tale with a twist.

Wynne Seaborne, from Boom Productions, said: "Rehearsals have been very productive, with every member of the cast throwing themselves completely into each of their individual roles.

"Every one of them has taken so naturally to it, that it almost seems as if the parts were written specifically for them, which is extremely impressive, considering the original script is over 400 years old.

"There is a huge buzz of excitement around everyone involved at every rehearsal.

"The cast themselves consists of a mix of old and new company members, with BOOM! regulars Ellen Nelson and Stephen McDermid taking on the title roles alongside a cast of 15 others.

"Some of which having never performed before, while others have never performed Shakespeare.

"We're setting it in the late 1960s, and are bringing in elements of the mods and rockers' culture that rose amongst people at the time; as well as bringing in a soundtrack consisting of some of the most popular songs that defined the era."

He added that the cast was looking forward to performing in Ffwrnes's smaller Stiwdio Stepni.

"Doing it in Stiwdio Stepni also provides a fantastically intimate setting that benefits both cast and audience alike - so much so that every audience member will be able to come away with a different experience from the show, and a different experience again if they come to see it more than once," he said.

"Ultimately though, the most important thing with this play is its story, as it's probably the most famous love story in the world for a reason, and we are hoping to exceed everyone's expectations with our adaption."

Performances will take place from Wednesday, June 17 to Saturday, June 20, with an extra matinee on the Saturday afternoon.
