Members of
Grantham’s Daytrippers Scooter Club were out in force on Sunday to make a
special presentation to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
The group
were presenting a cheque for £2,073 to the emergency service after raising the
money at a Night of Remembrance for founder member Steve Woollas.
Father-of-three
Steve was tragically killed in an industrial accident at Vacu-Lug on July 30
last year, at the age of 49.
Steve was
held in such high regard by the members of the Daytrippers club that they
decided to hold a night of remembrance for him at the Chameleon Music Bar and
Steakhouse on Saturday, April 25.
It was an
indication of his popularity that the event was sold out even before it had
been advertised. Around 350 people attended, with music provided by The Paul
Gibbard Band and guest DJs.
Mick
Lewis, of the Daytrippers, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to
everyone who supported the event.”
Also at
Sunday’s presentation event, club members presented Steve’s mum, Sue Woollas,
with a framed picture of her son on his beloved Lambretta.
Sue paid
tribute to the club members, saying: “I can’t thank the Daytrippers enough for
all they have done.
“Sunday’s
presentation was a lovely afternoon and a wonderful tribute to his memory. I
was so touched when they presented me with a framed photo of Steve on his
scooter.
“The club
members have been so good to me and so very supportive. They have done so much
to help keep his memory alive.”
Well-known
on the mod scene, Steve was the founder of the Grantham Daytrippers Scooter
Club, and was regularly seen out and about aboard his treasured blue Lambretta,
“his passion”.
In a
fitting and poignant tribute to their friend, club members provided a
procession of more than 30 scooters at the front of his funeral cortege last
August.
