‘Townshend’s concepts confused Daltrey’ reports Martin Kielty of Classic Rock

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has admitted he was almost always confused when bandmate Pete Townshend tried to explain his rock opera concepts.

He was only able to make one line of sense out of the guitarist’s idea for 1969 classic album Tommy – but it was enough for the vocalist to understand what was required of him.

Daltrey tells Q: “Did I have to ask him what the hell he was on about? All the time. But, equally, there’s always one sentence that comes out of that rambling brain of his that you can grasp. With Tommy it was: ‘Imaging living a life where you can only feel vibrations.’ I could latch onto that.”

Going Back Home, Daltrey’s collaborative album with Wilko Johnson, has just been released. The extended documentary DVD Sensation: The Story Of Tommy is released next week, and The Who are gearing up to make a new album this year.
